XI'AN, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Yang Shuyu scored 25 points as China overcame an early deficit to beat Spanish club Joventut Badalona 90-81 in a women's basketball friendly here on Wednesday.
After securing a third-place finish at the FIBA Women's Asia Cup on home court in July, China has entered a summer training camp as it builds towards the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Yang shot 10 of 14 from the field, including five 3-pointers. "This was our first test after training for a month. We showed something that we wanted to show, but also had something to improve," Yang said after the game.
The hosts were down 14-5 at the midpoint of the opening quarter, when towering center Zhang Ziyu was substituted in to form the 'twin towers' with Han Xu, as China began to make its way back into contention.
Joventut, which finished seventh in its debut season in Spain's top flight last season, built a 24-22 lead at the quarter's end, with Gnere Alima Dembele leading the way with 10 points.
Luo Xinyu's 3-pointer moved China 25-24 ahead early in the second quarter for its first lead since tip-off, and Han added a layup shortly afterwards.
The game was fiercely contested, as Dembele nailed two 3-pointers down the stretch while national team debutant Tian Yuanyuan's layup fueled China to a 41-38 halftime advantage.
Yang stole the show after the break, making three 3-pointers for 13 points in the third quarter as China set up a 12-point cushion entering the final frame and held on for the win.
Yang credited her performance to teammates. "I hope to shoulder more responsibilities in this team. Today I had more points, which was due to my teammates' assists, so it was an overall improvement," she remarked.
"Scoring 90 points was good, but we had problems on turnovers, rebounds and defense. Our players were a bit nervous at the start, especially those who earned a first-time call-up," said China coach Gong Luming.
Dembele had a game-high 27 points for Joventut.
"Our start was good in the game, with high pace and dynamic, but physically, today we played against the FIBA world No. 4 team, so it was tough," said Joventut head coach Jordi Vizcaino Teira. "Our first two or three minutes in the third quarter were terrible."
The two teams will meet again in Xi'an on Thursday. ■
