SUVA, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- The Vanuatu government will respond soon to the destruction left behind by cyclone Oma over the weekend, according to Vanuatu director of National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) Abraham Nasak.

Nasak said NDMO had received reports of the damage wrecked by Cyclone Oma, but the government of Vanuatu would release details soon, reported the Vanuatu Daily Post on Tuesday.

Heavy rain, strong winds and storm surges generated by Cyclone Oma had uprooted trees, destroyed homes and food crops in Torba and Sanma provinces.

About 76 households in the village of Olboe, West Coast Santo have lost their taro gardens to flash flooding and are likely to face food shortage.

The main damage reported on all islands is coastal destruction.

The sea swells from cyclone Oma have reshaped many coastlines in Vanuatu.

Nasak said preliminary assessments are underway in each province.

"The NDMO will deploy a team later this week to the affected areas to take account of the damages," he added.
